Mixing & Mastering
The term "mastering" is one of somewhat mythical proportions. It is the final step in a producer’s journey when working on a track that will give you that sought after and loud sound whilst retaining dynamics.
Mastering is very important if you take your music production seriously and it is the final step, but any respectable mastering engineer will tell you that mastering is definitely no substitute for a good mix.
Mastering can, however, take a mix from good to great.
The most important thing to understand is this: Mixing applies effects and level changes to each individual instrument track separately. Mastering focusses primarily on just the master channel or mixed down track.
Mastering serves as the 'glue' in a mix by making adjustments to the character of the overall sound of the track.
Both mixing and mastering are essential. Understanding both the power and limitations of each process is crucial to your music and your success.
